Questions & Answers

Everyone has questions. Tell us yours.

Q:
What is the difference between cast and calendared vinyl?
A:
Cast Vinyl can be considered performance vinyl. It is used to cover complex shapes, curves, rivets etc. It is used primarily for creating vehicle wraps and is generally 2 mil in thickness.

Calendared vinyl is generally used for flat or slightly curved surfaces such as windows or a vehicle door. It is typically 3 mil in thickness. Both vinyls are durable outdoors and come in a variety of finishes such as matte and gloss. Lamination is recommended for outdoor applications.
Q:
How do I update my VersaWorks software to the latest version?
A:
Update Your VersaWorks Software Automatically with Roland@NET - click here for more information. Otherwise you can obtain software updates and current media profiles through a manual update process. Follow these step-by-step instructions to complete this process.

1. Close Roland® VersaWorks.
2. Navigate to Start > All Programs > Roland VersaWorks and select Online Update.
3. Open the Update Settings window by navigating to Settings > Preference.
4. In Update Options, check Download Updates for Media and Color Profiles and select All updates.
5. Click OK.
6. Click Check for Update.
7. If an update is available, the Select Updates window is displayed. Make sure all available options are checked in this window.
8. Click Update and the software will start downloading the updates. Please note that a DOS window will appear. Depending on the speed of your computer, it may be displayed for a few minutes. Please wait until it closes by itself or a message "Press any key to continue" is displayed.
9. Click OK once the download is completed and the software will be automatically updated.
Q:
What is firmware and why should I install it?
A:
Firmware is software that is embedded in a piece of hardware. You can think of firmware simply as "software for hardware." And yes you should install it in your printer. Firmware and software are designed to function together. Versa Works is designed to function with your printer and Firmware upgrades may be needed when you upgrade VersaWorks.
Q:
How do I know if I need a firmware update?
A:
There’s no hard and fast rule here, however if you have noted that a software upgrade is available it would be a good idea to check the Roland® website to see if there is a new version of Firmware available. You can do that by following this link http://www.rolanddga.com/owners/support/productList.asp. Look for your specific printer model and you will find the latest firmware along with instructions on how to install it.
Q:
I know Roland® Versaworks has print profiles for Roland media but where can I find print profiles for Stahls’ heat transfer or DMS sign media?
A:
Sometimes an existing print profile will give you a great result. Other profiles are available for download here. Simply select your printer model and download the applicable print profile.
Q:
What does "laminate" or "laminating" mean?
A:
When creating durable outdoor signage graphics it is common to apply a second layer or overlaminate film to the printed graphic. Typically, overlaminate films will contain UV blockers and they will add scratch resistance to the original print. A good overlaminate film will be optically clear, meaning that you can see the image underneath the print. This will add years to the outdoor durability of the print. These are applied by using specialized machines called laminators. For more information or to see a demo, please call 800-521-5255.
Q:
Should I connect my printer to a batter backup unit?
A:
Yes, we highly recommend doing so. Battery backup units can be purchased at your local computer or office supply stores.
Q:
How long does an ink cartridge last?
A:
This will depend on what you print and how much you print. Some types of media, like canvas, can hold a lot of ink to provide stunning prints while others, like heat transfer material, can still provide a nice print but do not hold as much ink. Generally when making signs you can expect an average cost of about 25 cents per square foot and less than one penny per square inch when making heat transfer product.
Q:
Where Can I find Drivers for My Printer?
A:
Visit this link http://www.rolanddga.com/owners/support/productList.asp

Select your printer model. You’ll find helpful documents and videos to download as well as drivers and firmware updates.
