Choosing a Heat Press

10 Things to Look for in a Heat Press

  1. Even heat across the platen:

One of the most important things to look for in a heat press is the ability to provide constant heat across the platen. If there are cold spots then the graphic may not adhere to the garment correctly and could actually come off.

  2. Accurate heat:

Maintaining an accurate temperature is also very important when properly applying heat transfer material. If the press is not hot enough then the adhesive on the material may not activate and stay on the garment once applied. If it is too high then adhesive can actually squeeze out and leave an outline around the graphic.

  3. Even pressure:

Maintaining an even pressure allows the transfer to apply evenly across the garment. If a zipper or button is in the way, then try a print perfect pad to elevate the print area and provide a solid surface for even pressure.

  4. Easy to position garment:

Selecting a press that allows you to slide garments on and off easily is vital as it will reduce the chances of your getting burned or damaging garments.

  5. Easy to open and close press:

Some presses require a lot of muscle to open and close. If you’re applying a lot of transfers it can really take a toll on your arms and back. Many Hotronix® presses are available with an auto-open feature, which means the press automatically once the heat cycle is complete.

  6. Digital readouts:

Get consistent results from your heat press with digital time, temperature and pressure settings.

  7. Fits your workspace:

Take the time to choose a press that fits into your work space. Keep in mind that a clamshell model needs at least two feet of counter space. The swinger needs at least three feet. You’ll also want to plan on having room to layout garments and lettering.

  8. Can handle your workload:

If you plan on pressing hundreds of garments for hours on end then you’ll want you’re your press to maintain accurate temperature. High-volume dealers have reported using Hotronix® heat presses on over 1,000 garments without heat loss.

  9. Warranty:

Look for a press with a solid warranty and a company that stands behind their products. Hotronix® presses have both a lifetime platen warranty and a one-year limited warranty on parts and labor. They also feature corrosion-resistant, anodized aluminum framework, which makes it stronger, and a powder-coated, baked-on finish to keep it looking new.
